Lock-free Coauthoring in Microsoft Word

coauthoring Word

Soon, multiple people will be able to edit the SAME paragraph in Microsoft Word at the same time.

Lock-free coauthoring allows multiple users to edit the same paragraph simultaneously, improving real-time collaboration in Word.

What’s interesting is that Microsoft also built in fallback support.

So if someone in the collaboration session is using:
• an older version of Word
• unsupported document content
• or an unsupported environment

Word will automatically switch back to the existing coauthoring experience to keep collaboration stable and compatible for everyone involved.

A pretty meaningful improvement for teams that constantly collaborate on shared documents.

Rollout begins mid-May 2026 and completes by early June. Word will automatically enable this when supported.
