⚠️ Check your private channels before they’re deleted by July!
As part of Microsoft’s Private Channels modernization, some private channels won’t migrate automatically. The affected channels include:
- Private channels with no members
- Private channels that have only guest users and no internal owner
These channels are ineligible for migration. Both lack a valid in-tenant owner to which the channel’s group mailbox can be assigned, making migration impossible in the current state.
To migrate them successfully, admins must add at least one in-tenant user as the channel owner.
Unremediated channels will be soft-deleted, with a 30-day recovery window before permanent deletion. Applicable retention policies and legal holds will continue to be honored throughout this process, regardless of remediation status.
Rather than auditing channels manually, run Get-TenantPrivateChannelMigrationStatus. The cmdlet returns per-channel migration status, including ownerless channel IDs and associated team IDs.
Organizations running Teams Private Channels should audit this now. One of the important tasks to be done before July.
