Until now, if two people tried editing the same paragraph at the same time, Word could temporarily restrict one user, create edit conflicts, or make users wait until changes synced before continuing.
With the new lock-free coauthoring experience, that changes.
👉🏻Multiple users can now edit the same paragraph simultaneously in supported Word sessions, making collaboration feel more natural, reducing interruptions, and helping teams work together without constantly waiting on each other.
What’s not changing:
- File storage
- Sharing permissions
- Document access workflows
- Existing collaboration policies
If someone in the session is using an older Word client or the scenario isn’t supported yet, Word automatically falls back to the current coauthoring experience for that session. The feature is enabled by default and is rolling out globally from mid-May through early June 2026.
