Microsoft Teams Introduces Dedicated Governance for Built-in AI Agents

Microsoft Teams Introduces Dedicated Governance for Built-in AI Agents -

AI-powered agents are becoming a core part of the Microsoft Teams experience, helping users collaborate, summarize discussions, manage tasks, and get information more efficiently. However, as these AI capabilities expand, organizations need more granular controls to govern who can access them and how they are used.

To address this, Microsoft is introducing a dedicated governance experience for built-in Teams agents in the Teams admin center.

A Separate Management Experience for Built-in Agents

Previously, built-in agents were governed alongside traditional Teams apps. But agents such as Channel Agent, Facilitator, and Copilot Agent are different—they are deeply integrated into Teams and do not require installation from the Teams app store.

With this update, Microsoft is separating built-in agents from traditional app governance and providing a dedicated management surface under:

Teams admin center → Teams apps → Built-in Teams agents

This centralized experience gives administrators clearer visibility and more precise control over AI agents available within their organization.

What Controls Do Admins Get?

Using the new Built-in Teams agents page, administrators can:

  • Allow or block individual built-in agents
  • Assign agent access to specific users or groups
  • Configure agent-specific settings from a centralized location
  • Manage AI agents independently from traditional Teams apps

This allows organizations to adopt AI capabilities while maintaining the governance and access controls required for enterprise environments.

Important Change: Org-Wide App Settings No Longer Apply

A key change introduced with this update is that org-wide Microsoft app settings will no longer govern built-in Teams agents.

Existing agent configurations will remain unchanged after the rollout. However, administrators should review their current Teams app governance strategy and update agent-level permissions and configurations where necessary.

When Will It Be Available?

Microsoft will roll out this feature to General Availability (Worldwide and GCC) from early July 2026 through mid-July 2026.

Final Thoughts

As AI becomes increasingly embedded into everyday collaboration tools, governance must evolve alongside it. The new Built-in Teams agents management experience gives Microsoft 365 administrators a more structured way to control AI access, enforce policies, and manage AI adoption responsibly at scale.
