Microsoft Syncs HideFromAddressListEnabled Across Tenants

𝐂𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐬-𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐬𝐲𝐧𝐜 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐚𝐥𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐡𝐚𝐝 𝐚 𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐟𝐥𝐚𝐰.

Until a few months back, the HideFromAddressListEnabled attribute didn’t propagate during Entra Cross-Tenant Sync, which meant users intentionally hidden in the source tenant could still appear in the target tenant’s Global Address List. This created inconsistent People Search behavior and unnecessary confusion in Exchange address books.

👉🏻That gap is being addressed. Microsoft is now syncing HideFromAddressListEnabled across tenants via Entra Cross-Tenant Sync.
If a user is hidden in the source tenant, they’ll stay hidden in the target tenant too.

📍A backfill process will correct visibility for already synced users.
📍Dual-write ensures all future syncs maintain the same behavior.
📍There’s no impact on mail flow, sign-ins, or collaboration workloads.
📍This is a small attribute change, but for anyone operating cross-tenant identity at scale, it’s a meaningful correction that removes a long-standing inconsistency between Entra and Exchange.
