Microsoft Edge Defaults to Adobe PDF Viewer

Adobe PDF Viewer Is the Default Experience in Edge

What started as a 2023 announcement, Microsoft partnering with Adobe to bring the Acrobat engine into Edge has now fully played out for enterprise users.

As of March 2026, the Adobe-powered PDF viewer is the default on managed Windows devices. The backend is significantly upgraded with better rendering accuracy, improved performance, stronger accessibility features, and enhanced security.

It’s free and no Adobe subscription is required. One thing still on the clock: June 2026, when the legacy engine is permanently removed. If you’re still opted out via policy, that window is closing fast.

Did this transition go unnoticed in your environment—or was it planned?
