A long-standing Exchange Online limitation has finally been addressed.
Changing the organizer of an existing meeting or recurring meeting series has traditionally meant recreating the meeting from scratch. Exchange Online now introduces a new PowerShell cmdlet that enables administrators to transfer meeting ownership without recreating the meeting or series: Invoke-ChangeMeetingOrganizer
The new cmdlet enables administrators to:
- Change the organizer of an existing meeting or recurring meeting series.
- The new organizer receives full ownership of the meeting, including recurrence settings, attendees, meeting description, and other meeting properties.
- Internal attendees in the same Exchange Online organization don’t need to re-RSVP. Their calendars are automatically updated with the new organizer.
- Meeting history and continuity are preserved, making organizer transitions much smoother during employee offboarding, role changes, or extended leave.
A few things to know:
- The previous organizer isn’t automatically added as an attendee after the transfer. If needed, the new organizer must manually invite them.
- External attendees will receive two meeting messages—one ending the meeting from the previous organizer and another inviting them from the new organizer. They’ll need to accept the new invitation.
- Only meetings on a user’s default calendar can be transferred.
- Meetings stored in Group or Shared mailboxes can’t be transferred. Instead, add the new organizer to the mailbox.
- Microsoft has also announced that organizer transfer will eventually be available directly from Outlook on the web, the new Outlook, and Microsoft Teams, bringing this capability beyond PowerShell.
