New Teams Reader Role for the Teams Admin Center

Teams Reader Role in Admin Center

A new role is quietly rolling out that should’ve existed a long time ago: a Teams Reader role in the admin center.

The Teams Reader role gives read-only access across the Teams admin center. They can see everything a Teams admin sees, but can’t touch a thing.

No edit rights. No accidental changes. Only visibility.

It goes live in early June 2025 and rolls out automatically.

  • When it’s live, Global Admins can assign it through Microsoft Entra or the Microsoft 365 admin center.
  • Supports Administrative Units too, which is a solid touch for larger orgs.
  • The role does have some current limitations. For now, it won’t cover:
    • Teams management (coming soon)
    • Meeting & call details of users (coming soon)
    • Notifications & Rules management
    • Frontline worker deployment
    • Collaboration activity dashboard

Microsoft has confirmed these gaps will be addressed, so it’s only getting better from here. If you have auditors, helpdesk staff, or junior admins who need to see things without touching them, this role was made for them.
