New Collaborations Modes for External Collaboration in Microsoft Teams

External Collaboration Modes

If you manage Teams settings for your organization, here’s something you’ll want to pay attention to.

Microsoft is bringing a new simplified experience to manage how users collaborate with people outside the organization.

The update introduces three clear modes right in the Teams Admin Center:

  • Open – Fully flexible; allows collaboration with all external domains and Teams personal accounts.
  • Controlled – More restrictive (ideal for enterprises & EDU); external chats and meetings allowed, but shared channels are blocked.
  • Custom – Total control for admins who want to manually configure every setting across chats, meetings, Teams, and channels.

This new experience brings all external collaboration settings, across chats, calls, meetings, Teams, and shared channels, into one place.

No changes will be made to your settings unless you update the mode.

You’ll be able to try this in Preview from November 2025, and it will officially launch in February 2026.
