This is a huge update (numeric-wise) and a one thing that many of us didn’t see coming.

  • Hereafter, you can have up to 1000 private channels per team (previously limited to 30)
  • Each private channel can now have 5000 members (previously 250)
  • You can finally schedule meetings directly in private channels
  • Compliance shifts from user mailboxes β†’ team group mailboxes

Migration starts late September 2025 and will finish by mid-December 2025.

After migration, private channel data will move from user mailboxes to the team’s group mailbox.

  • βœ”οΈ Retention, DLP, legal hold, and eDiscovery policies must be applied at the group level
  • βœ”οΈ During migration, check both user mailboxes + group mailboxes for full coverage
  • βœ”οΈ If you don’t update policies, new private channel data won’t be protected

Microsoft will also release a new PowerShell cmdlet to help admins track when their tenant’s migration has started or completed.
